The Women That Elvis Loved Most
For Elvis Presley family was everything. His joy came from being surrounded by family and friends with music and good food. His mother, Gladys Love Smith Presley and his paternal Grandmother Minnie Mae Hood Presley were the most influential women in Elvis’ life. They provided him with a sense of stability and love.
While Gladys tended to be over protective, she also had a great sense of fun. With Gladys he could play, be natural and goofy. But underlying her playfulness was an anxiety she couldn’t rid herself of, always worrying about her only child. After a very difficult birth and the loss of the second born twin Jesse, Gladys was anxious to protect Elvis.
Minnie Mae was a more practical and conservative person. She provided a little sense of discipline and with a sharp tongue would tell the young Elvis the truth. He depended on both of these strong women to ground him. After loosing Gladys when he was only 22, Elvis came to count on Minnie Mae as the mother figure in his life. Having lived with Vernon’s young family since her divorce in 1954, she was a huge influence on Elvis. She had a strong sense of style and practicality.
Minnie Mae survived her daughter n law, son and grandson, living until 1980. Elvis would be glad to know that she lived in comfort at Graceland until her death. For both Gladys and Minnie Mae caring for family was a primary concern. Elvis continued this by being generous with his family and friends. Often buying cars and houses as well as allowing them to live where ever he made his home. Once accepted into the Presley clan, a friend was welcome at any time. The women Elvis loved most taught him that caring for family was paramount. If you like what you see, keep going: K&M Present: The Worst of Elvis Presley Impersonators
